The Feeding Ecological Guide is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary, criterion-referenced assessment designed to identify barriers, strengths, and opportunities that influence a child's participation with food. Rather than focusing solely on food consumption, the assessment examines the child's relationship with food through the interaction of biological, behavioral, sensory, oral-motor, nutritional, environmental, psychosocial, and caregiver variables that contribute to meaningful feeding experiences.
Grounded in the Pediatric Feeding Disorder (PFD) framework and supported by principles from Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Occupational Therapy (OT), Speech-Language Pathology (SLP), nutrition, and family-centered practice, the assessment emphasizes participation, repeated exposure, caregiver education, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The goal is to help clinicians develop individualized interventions that support lifelong food participation while respecting each child's unique learning history, developmental needs, sensory preferences, medical considerations, and family routines.
The Feeding Ecology Assessment is intended to be used alongside the Feeding Ecology Journal, Food Milestone Trackers, caregiver education materials, and intervention activities to monitor progress over time. Together, these tools provide clinicians and caregivers with a meaningful way to document food participation, identify patterns, evaluate environmental supports, and celebrate progress beyond food consumption alone.
The assessment evaluates multiple areas that influence feeding participation, including:
Medical and Developmental History
Nutritional Considerations
Feeding Safety
Sensory Preferences and Sensory Processing
Food Engagement Hierarchy (Touch, Smell, Lick, Bite, Swallow)
Food Milestone Tracking
Food Repertoire and Food Expansion
Food Color and Food Group Variety
