Track, Scale, & Score
This is for 1- The Ecological Feeding Assessment is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary, criterion-referenced assessment designed to identify barriers, strengths, and opportunities that influence a child's participation with food. Rather than focusing solely on food consumption, the assessment reviews the child's relationship with food through the interaction of biological, behavioral, sensory, oral-motor, nutritional, environmental, psychosocial, and caregiver variables that contribute to meaningful feeding experiences.
The Ecological Feeding Assessment is intended to be used alongside the Food Journal, caregiver education materials, and intervention activities to monitor progress over time. Together, these tools provide clinicians and caregivers with a meaningful way to document food participation, identify patterns, evaluate environmental supports, and celebrate progress beyond food consumption alone.
The assessment evaluates multiple areas that influence feeding participation, including:
- Medical and Developmental History
- Feeding Safety
- Sensory Preferences
- Food Engagement Hierarchy (Touch, Smell, Lick, Bite, Swallow)
- Ecological and Environmental Barriers
- Interdisciplinary Collaboration and Recommendations
Throughout the assessment, clinicians are encouraged to examine why feeding behaviors occur rather than simply documenting what a child eats. The Feeding Ecology Assessment recognizes that meaningful progress is reflected through increased opportunities for participation, caregiver implementation, environmental modifications, repeated exposure, and positive interactions with food across home, school, clinic, and community settings. By identifying strengths alongside barriers, clinicians can create individualized interventions that promote independence, caregiver confidence, and sustainable participation long after direct services have ended.
