The Feeding Environment + Gustatory Tolerance Scale is designed to help behavior analysts, clinicians, and interdisciplinary teams systematically observe, measure, and support a client’s participation in mealtime routines and exposure to foods within their current tolerance. This tool allows practitioners to evaluate how environmental factors (e.g., seating, pacing, demands, sensory load, social context) and gustatory experiences influence regulation, engagement, and assent during feeding. The goal is not to force consumption, but to identify patterns in tolerance, participation, and communication so that supports can be adjusted in a safe, respectful, and individualized way.

This scale supports BCBAs in remaining within scope by focusing on environmental arrangements, antecedent supports, functional communication, and gradual exposure while also identifying when feeding challenges may extend beyond behavioral support and require collaboration with or referral to Occupational Therapy or other specialists. Data collected through this tool can guide treatment planning, monitor progress over time, inform caregiver training, and promote interdisciplinary coordination to ensure that feeding support remains neurodiversity-affirming, assent-based, and clinically appropriate.
