The Feeding Ecology Assessment (FEA) is a comprehensive, sensory-informed ecological tool designed to understand how a child participates in mealtime within their natural environments. Rather than focusing solely on food acceptance or refusal, this assessment evaluates the full context in which feeding occurs, including routines, people, materials, sensory experiences, communication, and environmental factors that influence engagement and regulation.

The FEA emphasizes observation of real-life interactions and daily routines to identify patterns that support or interfere with meaningful participation in mealtimes. By examining the relationship between the child and their environment, clinicians and caregivers can better understand preferences, sensitivities, skill levels, and supports needed to promote positive feeding experiences. This approach recognizes that feeding is not just a behavior, but a functional life activity influenced by physical, sensory, social, and emotional variables.

This assessment is designed to guide individualized intervention planning by identifying strengths, barriers, and opportunities for gradual exposure, skill development, and environmental supports. The information gathered through the FEA helps clinicians develop practical, family-centered strategies that promote safety, independence, regulation, and participation during meals across settings.

The Feeding Ecology Assessment is intended to be used by trained professionals such as Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs), occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, and other interdisciplinary team members. It may also support caregiver collaboration by providing clear, observable information about how mealtime routines can be adjusted to better meet the child’s needs.
